The new Ryan Adams website is a site to behold, filled with birds, blossoms and bears. Taking an afternoon ride in Sweets' convertible to pick up tickets to his only NYC area performance at Starland Ballroom (huh?) was a highlight of the weekend. The show will most likely be the last I hit before heading to Rockfest. Hipsters without cars are likely to be wearing a hangdog face about this show's location. It really isn't in a very convenient spot. Even with a car.
Last week I found out the reason why I've been so run down the past few weeks. Evidently, some creepy crawlies had hunkered down in my tonsils and started to make themselves at home. A few days of antibiotics, my appetite is back, my throat doesn't have that odd tickle and I'm waking up at a reasonable hour and ready to rock. Except on Thursday cause I got a bit tore up at the MisShapes party at Hiro. Once I start dancing and drinking gin it is impossible to get me to go home.Talulah, the Divine Mr. M, Sweets and I all hit the dance floor to Madonna, the Caesars, Rolling Stones, Dee Lite, The Strokes and more gems. I didn't fully recover until Saturday. Note to self: You aren't 19 anymore, lass.
The weekend was mostly work at the house. Big changes are in the works here at the house. We're making over the second floor into a workspace. A closet is getting bashed to bits and replaced with twelve running feet of shelves. The floor is getting a Pergo facelift. Insulation will be injected in the walls. The climate controlled.
All this means is I had to put my head down and go through all the odds and ends that have ended up there. Three big trash bags went to the curb. Boxes were made for garage and ebay selling. The contents of my craft cabinet had to be sorted through and returned to their rightful places since most of it had migrated to the craft table resulting in a workspace too cluttered to work. Almost all of the furniture up there will be replaced. We're looking for a big L shaped desk for Sweets and I to share and a daybed for extra guests. It's so much fun to sort through paint chips and look for desks and chairs. It makes all the hard work well worth it.
Other than sorting through old copies of Martha Stewart Living, House and Garden, old correspondence etc, I took breaks to watch Desperate Housewives and Greys Anatomy on tv tonight at the Phantom of the Opera on dvd (most regrettably) last night. And I ate alot. It felt like I was hungry every few hours. Sweets made all the food this weekend- breakfasts of waffles, eggs, bacon and grits, pasta for dinner, running out for a late night pizza which we never do. I felt a flash of what it would like to be preggers, constantly wanting some odd food and Sweets producing it out of thin air.
This upcoming week will be busy:
5/16-5/17: Early to rise for contractor.
5/18: Mondo Diao bringing their sweet, sweet, Swedish salvation to our shore. With the Sights, possibly Detroit's cutest band. Lemme think about that to be certain and I'll get back to you for sure. At Bowery Ballroom. Then to the Cheeky Bastard after party at Hiro Ballroom. Andy Rourke of The Smiths will be on the 1 and 2. NICE!
5/20: New York Press Photographers Dinner. Sometimes, editors are allowed to leave the building AND wear cocktail dresses at the same time. Haven't really worked out the shoes and it's doubtful I'll have time to hunt down new ones. Damn. Shoe shopping mission unaccomplished.
5/21: The New York Burlesque Festival at Hiro Ballroom. I feel like Hiro is becoming my second home this month.
5/22: The Doves and Mercury Rev at the Theatre of the Living Arts, Philadelphia.
