Before, May gets totally out of hand, I think I should recap April because it was action packed. 4/2: The Pope dies. As a journalist, this catapulted me into a month long saga of intense coverage culminating in two special sections. This has to be in the top five news events of my career. 4/5: "We" ie, the staff of the newspaper that I work for, won a Pulitzer prize for breaking news. This is the second Pulitzer for us in five years. This year we were nominated for three and bagged one. Believe me, one Pulitzer makes a paper VERY happy. Drank champagne at my desk throughout the afternoon. That rocked! 4/9: Jaunt to Philadelphia for Psychedelic Furs show. Bought Doves tickets. 4/10: Who in their right mind would give up an oceanfront apartment just as the weather starts to get nice? Kooky, Sweets, that's who. We'd been spending all of our time here so we packed his Blockbuster store sized collection of dvds, shoved the couch out the door and he officially moved into the house. When his grandmama learned of the news she said shed pray for me. Oh, to be young, in love and sinners. My Grams on the other hand thinks Sweets and our newly found bliss to be the bomb. 4/14: The giant hole in my backyard revealing the gross septic tank finally gets fixed. Now I can stop worrying the dogs will fall into a vat of poo and concentrate on the fear they will be eviscerated by the groundhogs invading the yard. 4/19: Sweets had a birthday. I scampered around for days gathering gifts and paper without him knowing. One morning, I pretended to be exhausted and stayed in bed when he left for work and then made the mad dash for the shops. When he woke up on his birthday, I gave him a tshirt and a hip zippered sweater. He seemed satisfied. LIke that was it! Then I gave him a cd compilation I made for him like it was an afterthought. While he dressed I put a box with an ipod in it out on the table in the living room and waited until he found it. He was so excited he ALMOST forgot to give me a kiss. I took the day off as comp time from working on the Pope story. While enjoying a cup of coffee and a crumb bun and reading the paper at Freedmans Bakery in Belmar, I heard a new pope was elected. On a normal day, I would have scrapped my comp day and gone to work. But since it was Sweets big day, I decided to stay home unless I was called. The phone didnt ring so I whipped up a yummy dinner instead. It was nice to be home at night like a normal person. 4/21: NJPA awards dinner. Another year as chairman of the photo contest behind me, I can now breathe easy until the next entries start rolling in. Sweets surprised me by being there, too. He won a design award for his paper. 4/23: Second pope section is published. Some of my best editing ever. 4/29 -5/1: Tribeca Film Festival. Although this trip seemed doomed from the start, Sweets and I took our first mini break holiday. I found a really cool underground guest house in Williamsburg run by Argentinians. We hooked up with Talulah for a much needed Indian dinner and popped into various bars on the Lower East Side. When it got late, we went over to Hiro Ballroom at the Maritime Hotel. It looks like the House of Blue Leaves from Kill Bill or one of those period Asian films I love so much. From a dark wood vaulted ceiling, huge paper lanterns swung, pehaps in sync with the girls on swings up on stage. (Girls on swings is kinda very 1989 but I guess Im just old for remembering these things). While T-La chatted up the adorable boy shes working over there, Sweets and I danced. The next day, a pilgrimage to the Apple store was made. Tigers stripes were inspected. Ipod accessories were weighed carefully. Then we shared a plate of penne vodka and decided to take a nap since it was rainy. Refreshed, we went to the theater to see the midnight show of Nightwatch, a Russian film touted as similar to Lord of the Rings. I liked it but Sweets didnt. I can be much easier to amuse when it comes to movies.
