Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know. The summer is over. It's just taken me a few days to come to grips with it.
I woke up today thinking about how life is like an add-a-pearl necklace. See, for every season or milestone in life;you get to add a pearl to your strand. If my luck runs cold, I'll end up checking out with a choker around my neck. But, if things go the way I envision them.... I'll be wearing a long strand of pearls like a flapper, Charlestoning my way through those pearly gates, bathtub gin splashed all over my best beaded dress.
I appreciate fresh water pearls for their honesty. They're all different. Some may see that as imperfections. Most of the beads on my strand of life so far look like freshwater pearls. This summer's pearl is different. It's almost cultured it's so well rounded. I'll turn it between my fingers remembering this summer for many years to come.
That Dickens passage from Great Expectations that my high school put under your picture in the year book if you didn't bother to turn in a personal message keeps coming to me. You know, "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times....." This summer was a perfect blend of life's pleasures and dirty tricks. I loved. I lost. Was reunited and abandoned. Stung by bees and swooned in the heat. Danced with my eyes closed. Lived with my heart open.
I couldn't have imagined the events that occured. And can't regret one thing.
Here's to earning my next pearl.

Pearls are lovely. Unfortunately they must be acquired at the expense of another living thing, but then again, most good things are. And also then again, a lot of people eat oysters.
